Definition of lower back pain:
Lower back pain may stem from the nerves, spine or other tissue in the lower back. Lower back pain can also be caused from pain that radiates from other areas of the body. Pain in the rest of the back, testicular pain or a hernia can cause the lower back to ache.
Sitting to reduce lower back pain:
Try to sit in chairs with straight backs with your knees a little higher than your hips. If you can not adjust your chair, using a stool to elevate your feet can help. Do not slouch in a chair. If you have to turn to reach for something, turn with your entire body avoiding turning your back.
Sit up straight while driving. Avoid turning or leaning to reach for things or dash controls. Using a rolled up towel or pillow for lumbar support can help.
Standing positions to reduce lower back pain:
Try to avoid standing for long periods of time. If it can't be avoided, rest one foot on a low stool or shelf. Switch feet every 5 to 15 minutes to avoid stress on your lower back. Stand straight with good posture. Try to keep your hips, shoulders and ears in a line. Keep your stomach pulled in towards your back and your head up.

The best sleeping position for lower back pain is on your side with knees bent. Use one pillow under your head and one between your knees, if desired.
If you are more comfortable sleeping on your back, place a pillow under your knee and one below your lower back. Try to avoid sleeping on your stomach. If you must sleep on your stomach, place a pillow under your hips.
Using a firm mattress will be best for your back. If your current mattress is not hard enough, place a 1/2-inch thick piece of plywood between the box springs and mattress for support.
